Bacterial infections are a cause of many different health problems. It is thus best to curb the infections at the very beginning. Here we have listed out all important information about Bactrim and its uses:
What is Bactrim?
Bactrim is a combination drug. It is made up of Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim. The components are both antibiotics and are used to treat different types of infection caused by bacteria.
Bactrim blocks two consecutive steps in the biosynthesis of proteins and nucleic acids essential to bacteria. The ingredient Sulfamethoxazole inhibits bacterial synthesis of Dihydrofolic Acid which is important for the multiplication of bacteria. In this way the spreading out of bacteria is totally stopped. Whereas the component Sulfamethoxazole in not able to destroy the bacterial increase. And here the need for the other element in the combination demands its effectiveness. Here Trimethoprim blocks the production of Tetrahydrofolic acid from Dihydrofolic Acid by inhibiting the required enzyme named Dihydrofolate Reductase. Thus, the production of proteins essential for the growth of bacteria is stopped. This way the bacteria get starved and ultimately they die due to this.
